ABSTRACT

Organizational citizenship behavior (OCB) is necessary in overcoming emergency conditions, including learning difficulties such as experienced during and after the Covid-19 pandemic. Therefore, this research explored the visionary leadership effects of teachers' OCB through quality of work-life (QWL) and organizational commitment, and developed a new empirical model of the mediation mechanism. A quantitative approach with a survey method was used in this research, where Likert-scale questionnaires were distributed to 387 social sciences teachers in Indonesia. Using structural equation modeling (SEM) analysis, it was found that visionary leadership, QWL, and organizational commitment have a significant effect on OCB;visionary leadership significantly influences QWL and organizational commitment;and visionary leadership has a significant effect on OCB through QWL and organizational commitment. This evidence promotes a new model regarding the effect of visionary leadership on teachers' OCB mediated by QWL and organizational commitment. It not only confirms several previous studies as the basis for developing this research hypothesis, but is also an antithesis to previous research with contradictory conclusions. With such conditions, the new model provides theoretical and practical contributions which require in-depth and critical discussion before it is adopted or adapted as a model in improving teacher OCB via visionary leadership supported by QWL and organizational commitment. © Authors This work is licensed under a Creative Commons Attribution-NonCommercial-NoDerivatives 4.0 International License (CC BY-NC-ND 4.0)

ABSTRACT

PurposeThe COVID-19 pandemic has greatly impacted work, leading to the adoption of remote work practices and changes in power dynamics and trust. Although managing remote work has received much attention, the impact of the quality of work life on the effectiveness of hybrid workplaces has been less studied. This study aims to examine the relationship between quality of work life and psychological capital among organizational leaders using an artificial neural network (ANN) model. Design/methodology/approachThis study used a cross-sectional quantitative methodology. A structured questionnaire was used to collect 268 responses from organizational leaders using the convenience sampling method. The data collected were analyzed using the ANN model in the Python interface. FindingsThe ANN model training and testing revealed that there is a positive relationship between the quality of work life and psychological capital among organizational leaders. The R-squared values for hope, efficacy, resilience and optimism were 85.19%, 82.08%, 78.55% and 81.08%, respectively, in the training set, and 81.30%, 78.95%, 76.52% and 71.41% in the testing set. Originality/valueTo the best of the authors' knowledge, no previous research in the context of studying the relationship between quality of work life and psychological capital among organizational leaders using the machine learning approach - ANN model.

ABSTRACT

This study is principally the first to test a moderated mediation model of COVID-19 fear and job satisfaction in the Quality of Work Life (QWL)-commitment relationship of medical teachers during the pandemic. The conceptual model draws its theoretical tenet from spillover and conservation of resources theories. Cluster sampling was incorporated from four metropolitan cities in India. A mixed-method research design was administered to 378 medical teachers amidst the pandemic. The partial least squares structural equation modeling (PLS-SEM) results indicate a significant positive association between the constructs. Path analyses have highlighted positive associations between QWL, job satisfaction, and affective commitment to medical institutions. Further, a partial mediation effect of job satisfaction in the QWL-commitment relationship is highlighted, adding a new dimension to past studies. Intriguingly, each of the positive associations between QWL, job satisfaction, and commitment was negated and significantly moderated by the fear of COVID-19 experienced by the medical teaching fraternity. The findings offer practical implications to the stakeholders (Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, Department of Higher Education, Government of India, and State Governments) in enriching the QWL, job satisfaction, and medical teachers' commitment induced by psychological stress, anxiety, role conflict, post-traumatic stress disorder, and fear of COVID-19 in the global pandemic.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Many healthcare organizations place a high value on quality of work-life (QoWL). The healthcare system's long-term sustainability and capability to offer high-quality services to patients depend on improving QoWL for their healthcare workers. OBJECTIVE: The study aimed to explore the impact of Jordanian hospitals' workplace policies and measures in three main domains: (I) Infection prevention and control (IPC) measures, (II) Supply of personal protective equipment (PPE), and (III) COVID-19 precautionary measures on the QoWL among healthcare workers during the COVID-19 pandemic. METHODS: A cross-sectional survey was conducted from May to June 2021 through an online self-reported questionnaire (Google Form) targeting hospital healthcare professionals working at Jordanian hospitals (public, private, military, and university). The study used a valid work-related quality of life (WRQoL) scale to study the QoWL. RESULTS: A total of 484 HCWs in Jordanian hospitals participated in the study with a mean age of (34.8 ± 8.28 years). 57.6% of the respondents were females. 66.1% were married, with 61.6% having children at home. An average QoWL among healthcare workers in Jordanian hospitals during the pandemic was observed. The study results also showed a significant positive correlation between workplace policies (IPC measures, supply of PPE, and COVID-19 preventive measures) and the WRQoL among healthcare workers. CONCLUSION: Our findings highlighted the vital need for QoWL and psychological well-being support services for healthcare staff during pandemics. Improved IPC systems and other precautionary measures at the national and hospital management levels are required to help minimize the stress and fear that healthcare workers experience and lower the risk of COVID-19 and future pandemics.

ABSTRACT

Teleworking is booming since the outbreak of the pandemic. This way of organizing work has advantages but also risks, among which is the blurring of the boundaries between personal and professional life, which can be a source of conflicts. In this study, the conflict between family life and work (in both directions) is analysed for a sample of teleworkers taken from a study carried out by Spain's Centre for Sociological Research in October 2020. Three main phenomena are analysed: First, the characteristics of teleworkers who experience conflict more frequently;second, the impact of conflict on the preference for future telework;third, the relationship of telework with intra-couple conflict. It is found that work-family conflict, in all its forms, is a highly feminized phenomenon. ABSTRACT

Gender equality has become a hot topic in management as business leaders face growing pressures to advance women who remain significantly under-represented in key leadership jobs and face an on-going pay and stock equity gap. Growing market interest has also spawned diversity and inclusion research centers led by star faculty as organizational vehicles to enhance fundraising, social relevance, and reputation. Then, Covid- 19 hit, and work-life tensions related to gender equality, which existed before the pandemic, were accentuated as women's' default parenting, schooling supervision, and other domestic roles rose at the same time that often-mandated remote work skyrocketed. Therefore, as leaders prepare to manage through and beyond the pandemic, it is important to identify how gender interacts with work-life inclusion issues in order for managers to take action to advance women's career equality (PsycInfo Database Record (c) 2022 APA, all rights reserved)

ABSTRACT

The global COVID-19 pandemic has brought on many changes in Brazil, one of them being many organizations offering employees the option to set up teleworking, which up until that time had not been a common occurrence in the country. This article discusses the compulsory work from home scenario and analyzes the perceptions and experiences of workers who have been forced to work from home during the COVID-19 pandemic, identifying favorable and unfavorable factors for Quality of Work Life (QWL). We carried out a qualitative research based on Activity-Centered Ergonomics Applied to Quality of Life at Work (AEA_QLW) for twelve workers with varying positions in different public and private sector organizations. We analyzed their perceptions and experiences about working from home based on six categories examined by (AEA_QLW). The results revealed a balance: three of the categories largely concerning well-being (socio-professional relationships, recognition and professional growth, and use of computers) and three other categories largely concerning malaise (working conditions, work organization, and opinions of work), indicating possible focal points for interventions and care in maintaining this type of work. Important issues were discussed such as the lack of distinction between public and private spaces, the characteristics of current performance/fatigue, and the possible repercussions this can have on workers, their health, and on organizations.Alternate : El escenario de la pandemia de la COVID-19 en el mundo trajo incontables cambios, entre ellos, en Brasil, la opción de la mayoría de las organizaciones por el teletrabajo, hasta entonces, poco recurrente en el país. ABSTRACT

The study compared perceived differences in Quality of Work-Life (QoWL) among nurse clinicians and educators and coping strategies used by nurses. DESIGN: A cross-sectional study. METHODS: From August and November 2020, the study measured the QoWL and coping strategies of 360 nurses with two scales using a multi-stage sampling technique. The data were analysed with descriptive, Pearson correlation and multivariate linear regression analyses. RESULTS: Quality of Work-Life was generally low among nurses; nurse educators, however, had better QoWL than clinical nurses. Age, salary and nature of work predicted the QoWL of nurses. Work-family segmentation, seeking assistance, open communication and recreational activities were employed by most nurses to cope with challenges. With the rate of workload and work-related stress associated with COVID-19, nurse leaders must advocate for evidence-based coping strategies to deal with work and family life stress.

ABSTRACT

COVID-19 pandemic has been spread like wildfire and left its deadly impact throughout the world. This would harm businesses according to the sectors. Like other sectors real estate sector under the construction industry is also facing the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic. It becomes very detrimental about labour market, company liquidity, the supply of materials, project delivery, and key cost components, and so on. In general, it happens that the real estate sector often experiences complexities in case of project completion, scheduling, and financing. The planned work cannot be carried out due to the non-availability of sufficient numbers of skilled labours and staff. Moreover due to effects of pandemic real estate sectors and the work-life of real estate professionals are being hampered. It is very much obvious that human resources act as the lifeline of any organization and they need to be handled and managed with the utmost care and dignity. Despite the physical, technological and financial resources in the business, human resource is such a critical asset that employers should take care of their quality of work-life all the time, not only during the crisis period. By satisfying them the business can achieve its objectives in terms of revenue and recognition. After a strict lockdown when things return to new normal and employees return to work, the company needs to take certain 'human resource' perspectives for maintaining a good quality of work life. All the employers should implement some strategies concerning to qualitative work life of the employees during this epidemic situation. The real estate sector is labour intensive and employees are a very critical resource that helps to increase productivity and enhancing competitiveness in the market. The impact of the pandemic on the quality of work-life among real estate employees in Kolkata, India is also studied.

ABSTRACT

PurposeEmployee well-being in a casino work environment is crucial for the quality of work-life and employees' performance. This study examines the dimensions of well-being at a casino in Malaysia to gain deeper insights into employee challenges and motivational factors to arrive at practical mitigation efforts.Design/methodology/approachThe study adopted a qualitative approach involving 14 semi-structured interviews with casino employees in Malaysia. Interviews lasted 30 min to 2 h at a time when Covid-19 was raging in 2021. Responses were analysed via a data-driven approach and coded using NVivo software to delineate the contents into analytical categories of well-being dimensions.FindingsThe findings suggest that employees at the casino face challenges in achieving work-life balance. Employee's well-being suffers from insufficient break time, irregular working hours affecting family time, managing customer temper tantrums and lack of emotional support systems and remunerations altered by the pandemic. Women employees were particularly vulnerable.Research limitations/implicationsThe findings suggest a need to create better working conditions and address well-being with counselling support for stress management, a balanced approach by employers to the "customer is always right" mantra, creating promising career pathways and supervisors to have better oversight of workaholics. The research focused only on one casino and there was limited access to management departments for an organizational perspective.Originality/valueThis study adds to the body of knowledge on employee well-being in the context of a casino. It suggests hospitality and tourism organizations review their human resource practices that would ease the stresses at the workplace and create support systems to promote employee well-being. Crucially, in a pandemic crisis, well-being dimensions must be accommodating and integrative to employee sentiments, sensitivity and self-actualization.

ABSTRACT

AIMS: The first wave of the COVID-19 pandemic generated "risks" and uncertainties as well as organizational changes among French perinatal caregivers. Our study aimed to investigate the psychosocial impact of the first wave on this population. METHOD: Our participants (N=565) were invited to answer an online questionnaire that included questions on various indices of health and quality of life at work (e.g., ProQoL, perceived stress) and other questions on the impact of the pandemic on work organization. An open-ended question was designed to identify the participants' three most frequently perceived preoccupations with regard to the health situation. RESULTS: In addition to highlighting the multifactorial nature of participants' preoccupations, our results illustrated the effect of professional status and type of motherhood on the different indices of health and quality of life at work. When it was found that the pandemic had an impact on work organization and on teams, lower health and quality of work life scores were recorded. On the other hand, when positive impacts on organization were reported, mainly in terms of reduced work intensity, they were associated with higher health and quality of work life scores. CONCLUSION: We explain this last result as either one actual effect of the pandemic on work organization, or as a phenomenon of cognitive rationalization.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate changes in mental health and well-being (eg, quality of work life, health, intention to leave) among nursing home managers from a February 2020 prepandemic baseline to December 2021 in Alberta, Canada. DESIGN: Repeated cross-sectional survey. SETTING AND PARTICIPANTS: A random sample of nursing homes (n = 35) in urban areas of Alberta was selected on 3 strata (region, size, ownership). Care managers were invited to participate if they (1) managed a unit, (2) worked there for at least 3 months, and (3) worked at least 6 shifts per month. METHODS: We measured various mental health and well-being outcomes, including job satisfaction (Michigan Organizational Assessment Questionnaire Job Satisfaction Subscale), burnout (Maslach Burnout Inventory-exhaustion, cynicism, efficacy), organizational citizenship behaviors (constructive efforts by individuals to implement changes to improve performance), mental and physical health (Short Form-8 Health Survey), burden of worry, and intention to leave. We use mixed effects regression to examine changes at the survey time points, controlling for staffing and resident acuity. RESULTS: The final sample included 181 care managers (87 in the pre-COVID survey; 94 in the COVID survey). Response rates were 66.9% and 82.5% for the pre-COVID and COVID surveys, respectively. In the regression analysis, we found statistically significant negative changes in job satisfaction (mean difference -0.26, 95% CI -0.47 to -0.06; P = .011), cynicism (mean difference 0.43, 95% CI 0.02-0.84; P = .041), exhaustion (mean difference 0.84, 95% CI 0.41-1.27; P < .001), and SF-8 mental health (mean difference -6.49, 95% CI -9.60 to -3.39; P < .001). CONCLUSIONS AND IMPLICATIONS: Mental health and well-being of nursing home managers worsened during the pandemic, potentially placing them at risk for leaving their jobs and in need of improved support. These findings should be a major concern for policy makers, particularly given serious prepandemic workforce shortages. Ongoing assessment and support of this understudied group are needed.

ABSTRACT

Anxiety, depression and stress were the news norm of working environment for doctors fighting against Covid 19 virus spread. Doctors practicing in Government and Private Hospitals were found to be the major victims of this unavoidable situations. This article was constructed with twin objectives to identifying: the prime factors that caused stress for doctors during the Covid Pandemic period in Malappuram district in Kerala and to assess the doctors' satisfaction towards the factors that influenced their QWL during Covid Pandemic period in Malappuram district in Kerala. Two hundred doctors serving in Malappuram district in Kerala, in both category of hospitals group were considered as the sample. Researcher moved by the behaviour and attitude of the doctors toward their patients and treating them without caring their personal health or not bothering of getting infected the Covid effected patients. Both Government and Private hospitals ensured that doctors through Kerala have said that they had satisfactory access needed PPE kits (73.70 per cent), satisfied with the support extended to the doctor's family who were deputed in Covid wards (73 per cent), supports from the colleagues and technical staff (71 per cent) and they feel happy that the hospitals were well equipped to handle patients (70.70 per cent). The empirical data of the article declared that there exist association between nature of stress faced by the doctors during the Covid Pandemic period and their satisfaction towards their performance during this period and doctors' satisfaction towards their performance during this period with the factors that influenced their QWL during Covid Pandemic period. ABSTRACT

The research is inspired by the COVID-19 pandemic which affects face-to-face learning and leads to the e-learning system. However, educational institutions and related parties are not prepared for this sudden change. So, it is interesting to research the students’ intentions related to learning during the pandemic in the framework of the Technology Acceptance Model (TAM). Specifically, the research aims to analyze the acceptance and satisfaction model of e-learning users amid the pandemic. The proposed model that predicts student intentions and satisfaction with e-learning is an expanded TAM with factors such as quality of work life and information technology self-efficacy. The research provides empirical evidence related to the quality of work balance and the ability to use information technology related to e-learning access, in addition to other factors in the TAM. The data are collected by distributing online questionnaires with a snowball sampling model. The sample includes students who voluntarily fill out the questionnaire from various Indonesian universities. Then, the structural equation model processes the data using a Partial Least Square (PLS) approach and analyzes it through the SmartPLS3 program. The results show that the variables of quality of work life and information technology self-efficacy, such as computers, the Internet, and communication, can explain the acceptance of e-learning models, especially during a pandemic. As an implication of the results, the teachers should focus on e-learning designs that facilitate access to learning material and student-teacher interactions to attract intentions and increase students’ satisfaction in using e-learning. © 2022 Authors. ABSTRACT

This study analyzes the relationship between burnout and quality of work life among municipal workers subjected to higher levels of stress and emotional exhaustion, impacting their occupational health in the context of the COVID-19 pandemic. With a sample of 459 municipal workers, the relationship between burnout and quality of work life is tested by considering the isolated mediating effect of the feeling of contributing to productivity and the combined effects of two mediators representing the feeling of contributing to productivity and receiving an appropriate salary. The main findings include a negative association between the three dimensions of burnout: emotional exhaustion, feelings of cynicism, and a sense of being less effective, and the mediators: contribution to productivity and appropriate salary. Also detected was an important mediating role associated with the effects of not feeling contributive at work, as well as not being well paid, on the relation between the burnout syndrome dimension of low effectiveness and quality of work life. For future action by public authorities and public managers, the need is highlighted to create innovative human resource management frameworks and flexible work organization, with remuneration plans based on productivity goals and aimed at an improved balance between personal life and work.

ABSTRACT

The quality of life at work has been affected by the COVID-19 pandemic, generating labor overload, higher levels of stress, and a reduction in workers’ productivity. In the education sector, thousands of teachers were affected by the change to a new online work modality and the acquisition of new work tools. The aim of this study was to determine whether social support and general self-efficacy (GSE) significantly predict the quality of life at work in a group of Ecuadorian teachers. A total of 300 teachers of both genders, whose ages ranged between 21 and 64 years, participated in the study. For measurements, the Duke-UNK-11 General Sale Scale and the Scale of Quality of Life in the CVT-Gohisalo Work were used. The predictive analysis was performed through linear regression. The results show a moderately significant relationship between social support, GSE, and quality of life at work. Similarly, the multiple regression analysis confirms that social support and self-efficacy are variables that significantly predict the quality of life at work. The findings of this research also confirm that teachers with higher levels of GSE report higher levels of quality of life at work. In conclusion, the prediction of the variables social support and GSE in the quality of life at work of Ecuadorian teachers is confirmed. The implications of the predictive model mediating quality of life at work are discussed. Copyright © 2022 Jaguaco, Turpo-Chaparro, Vásquez-Villanueva and Apaza-Romero.

ABSTRACT

Purpose Principally, this study aims to test a conceptual framework of the moderating influence of fear of COVID-19 on the following hypothesized relationships (1) quality of work life and bankers' commitment, (2) the mediating spillover effect of job satisfaction in the quality of work life (QWL) and affective commitment relationship. Design/methodology/approach A quantitative cross-sectional research design is adopted on 318 bankers chosen from four prominent Indian cities. The mediation model is tested through SPSS, PROCESS macro, and AMOS. Conditional process modeling is also administered to test the moderating effect of fear of COVID-19. Findings The results suggest that the positive effect of QWL on commitment is completely mediated through job satisfaction. Further, the fear induced by COVID-19 negatively moderated the positive direct relation of QWL with commitment and the positive mediating spillover effect of job satisfaction. Originality/value The present research is virtually the first to introduce fear of COVID-19 as a psychological construct, to test a moderated mediation model for implications to organizational behavior and human psychology theory and practice. In coalescence of the need satisfaction, spillover, and COR theories, the authors postulate that as spillover between the domains of an individual's life (work, social, financial, personal, and overall life satisfaction) occurs, such effect is calibrated (augmented or attenuated) by the degree of risk/threat/depletion of their resources in the quest for attaining higher valued resources (overall life satisfaction). The moderated mediation mechanism is suggested for replication in other avenues for greater generalizability.
